Something’s wrong with the Birds – Teaching Averages Idea

Tell the students that you were followed to school by a flock of birds and they keep flying in and out of the classroom.

Tell them that the next time they fly in we will try to count them to see what we´re up against. Quickly flash a sheet on the IWB with between 15 and 20 birds on and ask them how many birds there were? Lead them into realising that we could find the mean, median and mode of the class estimates – discuss which is the most appropriate average.
